Kraków University Study Highlights Timbeter’s AI-driven Advantage in Timber Measurement

Timber measurement has long been a time-consuming and labor-intensive task, requiring precise calculations and adherence to strict technical standards. However, with advancements in digital tools, new solutions like Timbeter are transforming the way forestry professionals measure and manage timber. A recent study conducted at the University of Agriculture in Kraków highlights the significant benefits of Timbeter’s photo-optical measurement technology, demonstrating its potential to revolutionize the industry.

The Study: Comparing Traditional vs. Digital Measurement Methods

The research, conducted in one of Poland’s Forest Districts, compared the accuracy and efficiency of Timbeter’s digital measurement with traditional methods using the ruler. Using the conventional approach, measured 810.71 m³ of timber, while Timbeter recorded 823.55 m³—a difference of 1.5%. The biggest advantage was in time savings, with Timbeter reducing measurement time by 83% on average. Large-sized timber (diameter-measurement) was measured 89% faster, while medium-sized assortments (contour-measurement) saw a 62% improvement. For smaller stacks under 10 m³, discrepancies were minimal (0.5%), for stacks over 20 m³, maximum variation was 3,5%.

This difference in methods often explains why manual diameter measurements and Timbeter results may vary. Timbeter detects over 2000 points per log for precise diameter measurement and in manual measurement, the common practice is to measure the log at its widest and narrowest points, then calculate the average.
